What A Long Strange Trip It's Been

Tales From Black Rock City

Building 180 had the pleasure of venturing out into the dust for a number of weeks to build and share in the magic of Black Rock City!

Shannon contributed to The Shrine of Sympathetic Resonance by Tyson Ayers and Team, while Meredith worked on Head Maze with Matt Schultz and The Pier Group. Both were incredible feats and our team was sograteful to be on crew and get back to our roots, building BIG ART and community.

The experience is difficult to put into words, so we'll let the pictures do (most of) the talking! We sent out a desert preview newsletter in May and we were SO excited to see computer renderings come to life.

If you're an artist or a producer/designer/architect/etc. and need assistance with art, don't be shy and get in touch. We can help!

The event is unique as it allows for boundless creativity. People come together from all over the world to create a temporary city filled with art and play. The Folly (below) was a monumental structure by David Keane and the Folly Builders, filled with intricate dwellings and art pieces. In the end, it too turned to dust.

Building 180 was born from Burning Man. Too often we'd see these incredible sculptures tucked away in the corner of a warehouse and we wanted everyone to experience the awe and wonder we felt in the desert in the "default world."

A note from Larry Harvey:

"Our preoccupation has always been to craft space in such a way as to induce social interactions that would in turn generate a sense of community, but starting from the very immediate issue of how action influences perception." In that spirit, come prepared to act, to engage, and to create new collaborations that will extend far beyond Black Rock City. This is your event and we can't wait to see you there."

With hundreds of pieces on playa, there was simply too much to explore with too little time. We're already scheming on next year and how we can contribute. We'd love to hear about your favorite pieces and experiences on playa. E-mail us at info@building180.com to share!
