Public Art at Monumental Scale
In partnership with the Sijbrandij Foundation, Building 180 is proud to serve as the operational and curatorial lead for Big Art SF — a multi-year initiative to bring 100 monumental sculptures to public spaces across San Francisco.
Building 180 is the engine behind this ambitious vision. With nearly a decade of experience managing public art projects, we specialize in navigating the complex landscape of permitting, engineering, city approval, fabrication, installation, and stakeholder coordination. From interfacing with civic leaders and permitting offices to collaborating with structural engineers, fabricators, and artists, Building 180 ensures that each project meets both artistic and logistical excellence.
While the Sijbrandij Foundation generously funds the initiative and brings an inspiring vision to life, Building 180 is responsible for producing and stewarding the program at every stage. Our team handles site research, artist selection, technical feasibility, city coordination, and long-term planning.
Our process is deliberate and community-informed. We begin by identifying potential sites in collaboration with land-owning agencies and reviewing their feasibility from a structural, programmatic, and civic standpoint. Artworks are then selected from an open call of existing large-scale sculptures. These selections are vetted through consultation with an evolving advisory panel of artists, builders, community stakeholders, and policy leaders to ensure a balance of artistic merit, technical viability, and cultural relevance.
Each site placement is unique, and Building 180 acts as both consultant and administrator — tailoring the process to meet the needs of artists, community members, city agencies, and engineers. We recognize that great public art is not just about aesthetics but about safety, collaboration, and place-making. We are currently seeking existing monumental sculptures (10 feet and taller) on a rolling basis to be considered for inclusion in upcoming installations.
Together with the Sijbrandij Foundation, we are reimagining the San Francisco landscape — amplifying artists and transforming civic space through large-scale sculpture.
