 Transmigrations

Building 180 partnered with CIM Group and We All Scream to provide creative solutions to some “unsightly” architectural features at the Downtown Grand Hotel and Casino in downtown Las Vegas.

The challenge was to create a “view” for the 112 guest rooms that faced two interior light wells spanning 15,000 square feet in the building’s new Gallery Tower. The request was that the artwork be engaging and provide a unique experience for travelers.

Building 180 was keen to create an interactive art piece for the space and selected San Francisco-based, multimedia artist Camila Magrane for the task. Camila created two 70x100’ digital murals that come to life using augmented reality technology. Each guestroom hosts an ipad and has a unique vantage point to view virtual content.

Transmigrations is a custom continuation of Magrane’s “Virtual Mutations” made possible through a proprietary app created by the artist. Guests are able to view and interact with the augmented reality features of the artwork just outside of their hotel room window.

Building 180 facilitated the production of the installation, working with local vendors to print and install the digital mural on the building’s facade. Transmigrations required the coordination of many parties from the construction team to the hotel’s IT department to ensure the success of the project. Transmigrations is the largest augmented reality mural in the world.
