COVID-19 UPDATE: Thank you for your interest in applying to our artist in residence program. At this time, in line with California Governor Gavin Newsom's ongoing shelter-in-place order, the Ananta team has decided to indefinitely postpone the 2020 residency program. We are still accepting applications with the hope that we are able to move forward at a later date, but at this time it is important to prioritize the safety of our communities by complying with government mandated social distancing. Your application will automatically be considered when we reschedule the residency after the pandemic. You will not need to reapply. Please continue to check this webpage for updates about rescheduling as this crisis develops, and hopefully soon, subsides. We hope you remain safe and healthy through this difficult time.

Ananta Residence in Boulder Creek, CA

Ananta Residence in Boulder Creek, CA

Ananta is a new Artist Residency with the focus at the intersection of art, consciousness and technology. We believe in the gift of space and time. All residencies are provided free of charge.

Ananta is a home, a retreat center, and an artists’ haven set in the Santa Cruz Mountains in California. Ananta is a place to consider the possibility that through our artwork we become co-creators with nature. We believe the ideal relationship between technology and nature is a reciprocal one, and that art has the power to sensitize humans and our machines to the meaning manifest in nature. This six-week rent-free residency is an evolutionary experiment at the intersection of nature, art, and technology seeking to explore the wild and wired frontiers of human consciousness.

ABOUT OUR PROGRAM:

This opportunity is emerging out of a partnership between Ananta (a private home, a sacred space and a healing biotope located in Boulder Creek, CA), Building 180 and the Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness graduate program at California Institute of Integral Studies (a university striving to embody spirit, intellect, and wisdom in service to individuals, communities, and the earth).

  • 300 acres of public forest in Boulder Creek, CA adjacent to the property

SUBMISSION PROCESS AND REQUIREMENTS/CRITERIA:

  • All applicants must submit by the deadline

  • Artists will be asked to participate in mid-residency critique and end-of-residence event/showcase

  • End-of-program exit interview to assist in the betterment of the program

  • The location is fairly remote, so we ask that artists have their own form of transportation if they anticipate needing to leave frequently.

APPLICATION

This is a call to emerging artists and makers who want to explore the potentials of nature-human communication. We are searching for up to three participants to join in a collaborative venture aiming to nurture and express their artistic visions. Ideal applicants may find themselves pondering questions like:

  • How can Art and Technology give a voice to Nature?

  • How can we listen better to the language of Nature?

  • Can Artistically informed Technologies help translate the voices of nonhuman Nature or, perhaps, simply help human beings to be better listeners?

  • Can immersive Art, allied with contemporary Technologies, help attune and rehabilitate our human sensibilities to the language of nonhuman Nature?

  • How might Technological innovation be directed toward the flourishing of human and nonhuman life forms?

  • What kind of creation results when we aim to integrate our human subjectivity with the evolutionary powers of the universe?

  • How might the re-integration of Nature and Consciousness inform our Artistic approach?

  • How might a more cosmologically-informed Artistic lens transform the way we design and relate to emerging technologies?

PAST RESIDENCIES

This will be our 2nd season of our artist-in-residence program at Ananta. Previously artists explored the potentials of human-machine co-evolution in a creative cosmos. “What happens when a cyborg drinks ayahuasca?” was a question many artists came back to exploring throughout their time at Ananta.
